Bat Time
Ok I saw Batman yesterday and while I'm perfectly willing to go into 'spoilers' in the comments to this post, I want to keep the front page spoiler free if I can help it.
Was depressed when I went to see it as I saw my checking account balance... On the walk to the theater I decided that my best hopes would put it between Batman I and II. I felt, as I assume many did, that the first series went through a negative progression- 1 was better then 2 which was better then 3... and so on.
I fear this was a self fulfilling thought as I watched it. I ended up thinking that it was better then 2, because the two villains R'as and Scarecrow were written to fit together better then Catwoman and penguin.
But there was a level of intensity that I felt was missing from this movie. I thought Keaton captured Batman's inner conflicts and drive better then Bale.
Same goes for Nicholson. Scarecrow and R'as, while good solid villains just didn't give me the mad glee of Jack's Joker.
I also thought it was funny that I saw it with a couple of people who aren't comic geeks... So one asked what was up with Bale making his voice deeper when he was Batman. I laughed, another friend pointed out that what did you want- Batman's voice to be HIGHER? I pointed out that Bale was following Kevin Conroy's lead. That when Conroy voiced Bruce and Bats, he changed his voice... and Conroy did it better.
Which leads to the other problem I had with this movie. How many different times can I see/read Batman's origin retold. I felt this movie had elements of Year One and Mask of the Phantasm. And as with the intensity, I felt that Bruce's training was unbalanced. Instead of trying to be a master of everything and being anal retentive TO THE MAX... Bruce just learns Bat-fu at the hands of R'as.
Not that I didn't like the Bat-fu, I just wanted more. A friend who I saw it with, Mike, felt that Begins ranked as #1 best Batman movie because of the Bat-fu but I wanted more.
There were a couple of scenes that I liked and one like 5 min. plot point which I really hated.
So again, I liked the movie and I hope that they can do one or two solid Bat movies before they hammer the franchise back into the ground. I hope that they stay away from the Bat foes from the first series- which means using B list Bat foes( I mean heck the last movie had like 3 villains). I'd like to see the Ventriloquist. Not sure how well Man Bat would translate to the big screen but I love him. I don't think they could do Mad Hatter as they just did a mind altering villain.
OH-OH! I have it, Batman could go after Cluemaster. And since Bats doesn't have detective skills, he could get help from Cluemaster's daughter. I'd pay to see that ;-)
Oh and he needs to get another bat mobile.
