To save I must spend?

So for my birthday last month my comic book store gave me a $5 gift certificate and 'coupons'.

Now in the past I've thought the coupons were cool BUT forgot to properly use them. See the coupons are good for SPECIFIC things on SPECIFIC days. An example was the fact that one coupon was good for only two days- last Monday and Tuesday, and said was good for $10 off any purchase over $25... So I would have spend $15 to save $10. The 'fine print' mentioned that this of course wasn't good on 'new releases' or comics I had 'on hold'.
So I didn't use this coupon. Because there was nothing else but the comics on hold I really wanted. And I didn't want spend $15 for crap I didn't really want so that I could get $10 of stuff free that I didn't really NEED.

Last week was a coupon for $3 off an action figure. Now I brought the coupon with me to MY store and I looked around, they didn't have any action figures I really want... I saw a Legends Nightcrawler and thought about buying it... BUT I realized the figure was $10, so I'd still have to pay like $7 plus tax for a figure I only sorta wanted. I thought of going to another store in the chain and checking to see if they had had figure I wanted... but then I realized I'd have to pay some vague amount for a figure I could live without. So I didn't use the coupon.

Esp. as the action figures I really want aren't going to be out for a few months.
( Spiderman and friends- Iron Man, Crisis Earth 2 Robin, and the Elseworlds Batgirl)

I just find it interesting that stores OFTEN get people to buy something they don't need or wouldn't have bought UNLESS they saw the magic words X percentage off.
