My Answers to Evan's questions...

Ok Even had me ask him FIVE questions and then I boomranged it and asked him to ask ME five questions...

Below is my answers but first two things. One- if you want me to ask you 5 questions and you're NOT evan[ no backsees, I've asked you 5 q's and now you've asked me 5] tell me so in the comments and I'll give you 5 questions.
The second is the answer to the 5th question is in POOR, POOR bad taste. I don't want to hear about how offended you are with my answer if you read it AFTER I've warned you. So don't go there.

Now the five questions and answers:

1)1. If you could change one thing about me, what would it be and why?
I think this is an obvious question. Location, Location, Location.
I would NOT change this for you until about 2001, after I finished school and learnt enough about you that I would consider you friend so that our meeting wouldn’t be a deal breaker. I’d put you (and your family) somewhere on the Northeast Corridor. I mean you wouldn’t have to be getting your graduate degree in Boston, so long as I could take Amtrak somewhere to meet you.
[ note when I say deal breaker- I’m saying that while I currently believe if I met you on the street or at the game store- we’d be friends… I’m more sure of it after all these years then I might’ve been at the beginning. Perhaps my being pretty Vanilla would throw you off or something the other way… but I think if we met tomorrow, we’d be pretty good friends]

2. In what way or ways (if any) do you think your life would be different if your Bar Mitzvah experience had gone differently for you?
To the people who don’t know me as well as you- there was two times that I thought of getting a Bar Mitzvah, the first was at age 12 natch. I didn’t get it because oddly I had moral objections to it. Basically my language skills suck, and while my rabbi suggested that I could just cheat and memorize phonetically the part of the torah (and half torah?) that I was suppose to read from. As my language suggests, I didn’t think memorizing just a passage would be right….
I don’t think that anything would’ve changed had I bite the bullet then. I think I would’ve made my grandpa proud, who was also not Bar Mitzvahed- but that was because he was the only Jewish family growing up in his town. But I think the first time would’ve just been going through the motions. While I lost touch with everyone in my grade school, I’m not sure that any of them or any of the people at my junior high/high school changed because of it.
However, I did join a temple here in Ma. With the thought of doing my grandfather (and rest of my family proud) and getting a Bar Mitzvah. I can not rightly recall what year that was… though I would say it had to be after ’88. I went to a Torah study class and talked to the female Rabbi. I must say I rather liked that the Rabbi was female and it went along with my liberal leanings. The Torah study ended up re-affirming my views of organized religion… as we spent an hour talking about the first letter of the Torah (which is the second letter of the Hebrew alphabet and looks like a c) and at another session spent time talking about gays in the Torah.
There is something about me that does not accept organized religion, I do not like the story of Abraham offering up his son, which I heard every New Year with my grandfather, nor other tales that told people to OBEY the will of ‘thy lord, thy god…’. So I think that had I gotten a Bar Mitzvah the second time, and she didn’t offer me an easy out- I would’ve had to learn Hebrew… it would’ve meant an acceptance on my part of organized religion. It would’ve meant a lot of study and more time at the temple, perhaps even ( as my dad wants) fostering in me a sense of community within the temple… perhaps networking with other Jews to help find jobs and meeting a “nice Jewish girl”.
So the first was my first ‘adult’ decision, my parents let me choose and I think helped set the tone of my beliefs in my religion. Had they forced me to get a Bar Mitzvah- or had chosen the other door- I don’t think it would’ve changed anything… save for perhaps make me a bit more ‘acceptable’ to a practicing Jewess. The second time might’ve been ‘the road not taken’ instead of what it turned out to be, simply a re-affirmation of my beliefs. I like being Jewish but not religious.

3. Suppose you were offered your dream job, but it (through physical distance, income, responsibilities or combinations thereof) meant you could only visit family once a year (meaning you'd also have to split even more limited time between divorced family, etc.), would you still take the job?

Yes I would in a heart beat. While I do like seeing my step sister more these days because of my nephew- I’d rather have a good job and thus a better sense of well being. The job would also have the effect of making the visit I do end up having with them better. My thanksgiving visit with my mom went MUCH better this time because I’m dieting and thus am ‘making her proud’. A good job that makes me happy would have the same result on my family.
Plus the added bonus of having my ‘dream’ job would mean that I’d have money to perhaps meet you and other evan crewers at SDCC.
And have I mentioned recently that I don’t exactly love my family?

4. (How Peter David dealt with this in the Hulk is perhaps one of my favorite of his stories...) If you could go back in time to when Hitler was a baby or child and off him, would you, and why or why not?
This is an easy question… and FYI, it was brought up first (and better) in The Dead Zone… I *loved* that scene in the movie.
The answer is easy because a) One of my oldest friends happens to be a big WWII buff and b) I just recently read Making History by Stephen Fry.
No, I would not kill Hitler, because the Holocaust can’t be put JUST on Hitler’s shoulders. Yes, I would say he was evil BUT he had other evil people working for him AND Germany was ripe at that time for someone LIKE Hitler… So if you killed Hitler, he’d just be replaced by someone else.
So while I might be willing to go back in time to kill people to get a possibly better outcome, Hitler would not be on my hit list.
[And yes I’d recommend you read Fry’s Making History if you find this question interesting as someone in the story DOES nullify Hitler with interesting results]

5. A twist on one of your questions to me: if you could enter into a feature film or television show and attempt to change the outcome of something in it, which character in which film or show (and which episode if applicable), what would you try and change and why?
First I must say there are several shows (esp. Quantum Leap) where I’d like to change the scripts to make the story flow/ make more sense series wise.
This one is going to have to take a bit of time… as it’s a very broad question- esp. as I’m not sure if I have to try and decide to ‘save’ a favorite character or help the plot.
Added to that is the ‘time factor’ I’m much more likely to think of a NEWER movie, not because that would be the best to be, but because that’s the way my mind works.
I thought about going into Angel to fix the 3rd or 4th season, but then I figure the season would just be broken again… plus I loved spike in season 4 and wouldn’t want to fix that.

I found the ‘funniest’ idea, which is not my answer, would be to go into Ben Hur shortly before the end and try to convince him to STAY Jewish. That would be amusing for me. I also considered using the 4th question here- and going into Episode 1 to speak to the Jedi Council- let them know that Palpitine was a BAD egg, to buy Anakin’s mom and be nice but not TOO nice to young Anakin… But that would nullify the ‘middle sage’ which wouldn’t be all that fun.

On the same thinking as my ‘almost answer’ of Ben Hur is my real answer- which I consider to be in questionable taste- but then I found the movie to be in questionable taste. I would go into Passion of the Christ. I would try to ‘save’ Jesus from the Romans. I figure if I saved Jesus and he went back, willingly, that would show the world how much of a bottom Jesus was. And if Jesus did NOT go back… bonus time for me as the movie would be about a time traveling jew ( me) being a mensh and saving Jesus.
