Reading...

OK, I’ve been pretty darn bad about updating this here blog. Blame it on trying to clean, figure out what to do with my life, deal with my tattoo and otherwise deal with life.
I realize I’ve also got this nice vicious circle going. See I’m downloading comics right now from the interwebs… The downloads mean that my web browser is slower, which has lead to me READING the comics that I’ve downloaded as I download more comics… I think this is a good thing, but not 100%
Comic wise I’ve been reading Batgirl. It seems to have very good reviews on Scans Daily (a NSFW but a wonderfully amusing web site.) At first I wondered why I didn’t pick this up in the first place and then I remembered as I was reading the comic and the ‘story’ was interrupted by various Batman X-O’s. It really bothers me that to read Batman and Superman- you have to buy ALL their titles. The X-Men at Marvel have often been almost as bad… BUT for Superman and Batman this is a more regular year in, year out thing where as for the X-men it SEEMS to have died out. I say SEEMS because even though I don’t read Superman and Bats I seem to keep up more with what’s happening with them then I do with the X-Men. I also stayed away from Batgirl because well… it was spun out of No Man’s Land and a) I didn’t like that they made Helena Batgirl in NML- it made NO SENSE and b) I really hated the end of NML( Gordo should’ve killed the Joker… SERIOUSLY); so I didn’t want anything to do with Bat titles for a while after that. However that said, I sorta like Batgirl, there are bumps in the story like the crossovers of other Bat titles but I’m at #28 and for the most part Batgirl is pretty well written and I’ve gotten to the part where she’s hanging out with Steph- which is pretty darn amusing. In fact one of the issues of Batgirl which crosses over with Bruce Wayne Fugitive, I liked the comic because of Batgirl playing tag with Steph and otherwise horsing around/ abusing poor Steph. I also found it interesting how much Batman seems to admire Batgirl( what is her name… I don’t recall anyone calling her anything but Batgirl)… Bruce admires her because she at like 14 is a better fighter then HE IS. To be frank, I’d like to see Batgirl go against Karate Kid… or Taskmaster. Though a friend felt that Atom( who could punch out an engine block) would be in Batgirl’s class as well…
I’ve read the NEW GLC- which I liked and was very happy for finding the 80 page Elseworlds giant that NEVER came out here. I’ve also been reading Deadpool… though I haven’t finished it yet. I find I’m more likely to read the comics if I have them on my hard drive then if I have them on a disk. Next up( after I finish Batgirl) is the NEW Ant Man series( again recommended by scans daily).
Now onto some of the books I’ve read but forgot to mention I’ve read… and I thought I had read more but [shrug]
Book 12: For a Few Demons More by Kim Harrison. This is part of a series I would HIGHLY recommend and thus will only mention a few general details as I don’t want to spoil the series… and I do recommend it. It stars Rachel Morgan- a witch who’s sort of a private investigator along with her best friends a living vampire and a pixie. It’s sort of like the Harry Dresden Series BUT the magical creatures are more public. Basically a bad batch of genetically modified tomatoes wiped out a large portion of humanity which gave the supernaturals the guts to come out publicly. So you have a world of vampires, pixies, witches, weres and DEMONS- Oh yes, there are demons in this world. The main character, like Harry, is just trying to make a living and stay one step ahead of the demons… but sometimes it’s not that easy for her, esp. when it’s been pointed out that she’s an adrenaline junkie and THRIVES on bad stuff happening.
Book 13: Dates from Hell by various. I borrow this from the library because it had a story from Kim Harrison and I wanted to read it. It stars Ivy (Rachel’s partner) and takes place shortly before the first book- when Rachel and Ivy end up teaming up while working at the supernatural equivalent of the FBI. I read the other stories in this collection but wasn’t really impressed by any enough to write down the names of the authors and check out their other works.
Book 14: All Together Dead by Charlene Harris. Another series with vampires in it. In this series, Vampires have announced their existence following the scientific invention of an artificial blood that Vampires can drink. The vampires decide that now that they CAN live without humans worrying about vampires killing them… the vampires can admit their existence. Our heroine, Sookie, is a telepath who ends up being VERY happy at first with meeting vampires because she can’t read their minds and so can be a normal person with them. She ends up find out that weres, witches and fairies exist and just haven’t made themselves known yet. Not giving out specific details because, again this is the latest in a series. The only thing I will say is I liked the fact that as this is billed as a Southern Vampire series that Hurricane Katrina is mentioned in the book- and while the book takes place AFTER Katrina (and not during) we see the ramifications of what happens to the vampires do to what Katrina did to New Orleans (though I was waiting and never got a “George Bush doesn’t care about Vampires!” Oh and I like the Harrison witch series- which I bought vs. the Harris series which I borrow from the library.

The x-titles are doing their first big x-o in years sometime this summer with the "extinction" story. I am, of course, not looking forward to it.
I never could get into bondage batgirl, whose name is Cassandra Cain btw, I don't know if it was because a-she ain't Babs, b-she came out of NML or c-she's just another in a long list of psychologically unhinged people that Bruce decides to make into a sidekick (oh, wait, they're called "partners" now--forever cementing the gay jokes). And now she's a villain, but she's only a villain because of drugs. . .blech. I fear that if they had her fight KK, it would have a cheesy resolution a la the KK Batman fight and just be unsatisfying.
I found a set of EIGHT downloads that, rather than give you one title and screw you for cross-overs, provides every appearance of Superman post-Crisis in chronilogical order (and pertinent tie-in issues) which negates the whole "part of a crossover arriving and throwing things out of context" problem. Sadly, the guy has only done it for Superman thus far. A Bat version would be gravy.
My quick opinion on other mentioned:
Ant Man, like his self-launched other Marvel Work, I don't dig this Kirkman book.
I find that I burn to disk, then when I feel like reading, I copy from disk back onto harddrive and read then delete--still keeping original disk

C- yeah as I read it, I realize i) how messed up the writers made her. She is MAJOR damaged goods even by Bat standards and ii) There seems to be a much creepier relationship with her then Bruce has with 'the boys'. Again I point out how much he seems to admire her 'skillz' but it goes deeper- as he gives her A BATGIRL CAVE. I mean it's not like Robin has is his own redcave or Batman help Dick design a nightwing retreat... but he gave HER a cave.
And her cave seems to just have a computer and punching bags. I don't even see a bed.
Actually the ONLY amusing bit during a connor crossover( because Dixon writes BG at times)... was the fact that Batgirl and Connor both don't know how to drive- so they NEED robin to drive them.
And I guess you'd be right in her fight with KK. I said it because I thought it might be fun- but you're right, it prolly wouldn't be handled well as I don't really trust ANY comic book writers too much these days.
As for the burning and then putting back on the hard drive- that's what's going to end up happening with deadpool( as he's on disc) and other stuff. I didn't PLAN it that way- just a) easier to read off hard drive and b) have to clean hard drive from time to time to make room for stuff.
And will let you know about Ant Man- just I heard interesting things so I'd thought I'd give it a try...
