Book Corner
When I saw this on adj's friend's list under animated_max, I was like ehhh. Sort of interesting but not worth the trouble.
However evan made me 'it' and thus I feel I must respond.
1) Total number of books I have owned:
Countless. I don't say this to be a smart ass, I say this because it is quite literally countless.
As I've mentioned, my father and his second wife were publishers. She worked for Balentine Books, which has Del Rey as an imprint. During my youth I would be able to write out a list of books for her and she would get them for me- not for my birthday, or x-mas, or because I was 'good' but just cause.
Many old ladies have a bowl of candy to give guests who are so interested, my dad has a stack of books.
And on top of the books that they brought home, we would every so often go to a local bookstore as a family outing. We would find out what they were displaying, what books of my parents they were selling... and my dad would then whip out his credit card and buy us MORE books.
So there is NO way I could count how many books have passed thru my hands.
2)The last book I bought.
I bought it for Evan for his birthday.
So second to last book I bought- Smoke and Shadows By Tanya Huff.
3) The Last Book I read.
Currently reading A conspiracy of paper by David Liss- and I read it this morning, thus making it the last book I read.
4) 5 books that mean something to me.
My first thought was that there was simply no way to answer this. There are too many books that I've read, owned and loved. I was able to answer the dvd question by thinking of what do I play often, or what do I go out of my way to make sure I watch....
However I thought about it a bit and came up with the following list.
The first two I list because when my mom moved after 18 years or so of my life- I made sure I packed up these two books and OWNED them.
Nobody Listens to Andrew by Elizabeth Guilfoile. This is about a little boy named Andrew who finds a bear in his closet but nobody will listen to him( hence the title).
The elephant who liked to smash small cars by Jean Merrill and Ronni Solbert. This was a very cute and out of print book about a cute elephant who... liked to smash small cars. It even had a song about his joy of smashing small cars.
Gotta love an elephant who does what he loves.
The third is either the Superman or Batman from the 30's to 70's Collections I have published by Harmony Books. I list and count them as one- as I could not imagine having one without the other and they both mean the same thing to me.
They were both published in 1971. This was before 'trade paperbacks' or 'reprints', before Marvel and DC printed their OWN books. If I wanted to read old batman stories it was this book or find SOMEWAY of buying old issues( they also pre date my local comic book shop.)
And a bit more then that. They are personal history. My father published them. He worked at Harmony at the time... and the way he tells it, he published these books because my older brother was in the bathtub and thought that it would be really cool to have a book of batman. I was 4 so I prolly didn't read comics at the time... Otherwise I'm sure I'd've asked him to publish them.
The forth book is Marvel Masterworks: Amazing Spiderman Vol. 1. The reason is simple. On the credits page, the second to last name credited is Andrew Harris. That Andrew Harris is the same as the one blogging.
I could list the other two of the first three published volumes of Marvel Masterworks, as I worked on all three Vol. 1.... but it's the Amazing Spiderman that I have on my shelf- signed by most of the people that worked on it with me.... to prove that I was the same Andrew Harris.
And right now I can't think of a five. So I will leave that blank. I think I answered the question today better then when I saw it last night.
I'm tired and grumpy so don't feel like tagging others. If you want to put this on your blog- feel free but no pressure.
