Work.
This week at work has been awful and I’m not sure if it’s going to get better or if instead of playing sims Tuesday and Wednesday I should look for a job…. Well actually I know I should look for a job instead of playing Sims Pets, the question is WILL I be able to shelve Sims Pets after getting it.
The snowball of ick, started when Assistant Manager S. left the store last week. I thought S was flakey but it a good way. She was amusing and not a hard ass, and so I was a bit sad to see her go. Not more then a bit as I really would prefer not working at the gift store and so haven’t made too many connections there. However, because she left there seemed to be a shift in the power structure. It’s not that they promoted someone to her Ass’t Manager slot it’s just…
Well before this there was a manager- who tries to be the “nice guy”- M, S who as I said was nice and lenient, letting people get away with stuff and then there’s Ass’t Manager L. I like L but others don’t. She’s anal retentive, which I can deal. I like knowing what’s expected of me. I know where I stand with L and what’s expected of me.
Others, however, don’t like L because she’s the “enforcer”. Since M likes to be nice, he gets L to do his dirty work and discipline others. And without S there, perhaps there’s not enough balance between M and L.
On Monday, one of my co-workers wasn’t in “uniform”. Our uniform is the company polo, kakis and our badge. She had unzipped hoodie on OVER the polo. L pointed out this was “wrong”. The co worker got bitchy, pointing out that she was cold, and that NO other manager had a problem with it… And to be honest S. often wore sweatshirts as she ran pretty cold herself- but S sweats at least were ones that had the logo on them. L pointed out that this worker wasn’t in uniform and this was bad… And I think it was pointed out that the company allows you to wear shirts UNDER the polo, but that the polo has the corporate logo- which people have to see.
The hoodie wearer ended up leaving rather then take the hoodie off. And if if she was a bitch, then my other co worker that day was warrior princess bitch as she told L that NO ONE liked her. That L was hung up on all these rules that no one cared about.
I tried to be nice to L because I know that M is a twit so I offered to pick up food for her at the mall, which I went to for break as I needed a break, and got her a chocolate something because I know chocolate helps make things better.
Last night things proved that my manager is a stupe. He tried to find out where everyone was as he hadn’t seen one of the people who was suppose to be working. One of my co workers pointed out that there was a communication problem at the store. This got M pissed. He got defensive… and later asked me if I felt there was a communication problem. Thinking about Monday, I decided to be diplomatic and say a little bit and use an example OTHER then Monday. I told him that the receiver had a habit of going to break whenever he wanted, and thus people sometimes weren’t sure if he was around. I felt this was a ‘safe’ example as I wasn’t attacking M, and I felt that it was a “given” that the important thing about changing break time is letting someone know- 90% of the time no one has had a problem when I’ve wanted to change break time, they just want to know where I am. Apparently M doesn’t take criticism well because he countered that the reason people have complained about the receiver is because people don’t like the receiver… Now yes, people don’t like the receiver but that doesn’t mean my point wasn’t valid; it just means the next time he asks for my opinion I’m less likely to be truthful.
I also found ironic that he later proved my point about lack of communication as there was a sleep over last night and he told all of us that campers from now until Nov. get 10% off. However he didn’t tell my co-workers that there were campers last night- just when they came they would get 10% off… Worse IMHO was that when asked, and I forget why I asked just glad I did, I found out that he hadn’t told the museum person in charge of camp ins that the campers get 10% off. I say worse because if we want to bolster business by giving them 10% off… they should know this.
We’re having a meeting on Monday. I am dreading it. I also am kicking myself because at the top I mentioned how I’ve tried not to form any real emotional attachments at work… however my two nights off this week will be spent with co workers- the first is because L. is giving a speech for her doctorate and wanted people there… Since I’ve been supportive and nice to her, she likes me and invited me. I feel I should go, so I will. The other night… well before I know about L’s event; I have a lonely co worker. He moved here from the Seatle, and doesn’t know anyone outside of work. He’s dropped hints to me a good bit that since he recently stopped drinking and he doesn’t know anyone he just stays home watching movies…. Because I’m either a yutz or a mensh( or both) I finally broke down and invited him to go get wings with me as I’ve been getting boneless wings about once a week at Wings Over Brookline and wanted to share- esp. as Wings is really a take out joint so doesn’t sell beer and I know he doesn’t drink so I figure that would be a good way to go get food with him and not have to worry about me drinking in front of him.
