Valerie Plame
I've been trying to keep up with Valerie Plame's story as I just find it scary/mind boggling. I wrote her and her husband's part of the story earlier this month.
What I didn't mention there was where the story takes a much stranger and still sinister turn. You see, at first the republicans didn't want to do ANYTHING about the leak because... well they knew it was one of theirs. However the white house was forced to start a panel( sort of like they were forced to start the 9/11 commission). This panel then started subpoenaing members of the press who SAID they talked to the leak, but had NOT actually printed the fact that Plame was a CIA agent. The 'newest' wrinkle is that two reporters are facing jail time for not reveling their source.
The reason this is strange and sinister is because neither of the reporters mentioned in the article is Robert Novak- the guy who ACTUALLY published the story.
They've taken No action against Novak because he did as they asked and leaked the story. They're right now on a witch hunt NOT to find the source, but to scare reporters so they'll think twice about reporting against the white house. They subpoenaed people with ethics- who would rather go to jail then revel the scum who tried to OUT Valerie Plum.
Yeah- that's the republican trick, use OTHER people's ethics against them. Do you really think that Bill O'Riely would've paid the producer if he wasn't guilty? Do you think he'd serve a DAY of jail time to protect one of his listeners?
Do you think that when faced with possible jail time, Novak won't give up his source. I'm pretty sure that IF he was ever called to testify, he'd give up his source in a second... and that's why the republicans won't ever ask him who HIS source was.
Heck, I find it interesting that any law reform enacted to help SAVE the innocent reporters facing jail time, will end up helping slime like Novak.
