The Big Dig...

I've been meaning to blog about this for a few weeks, but haven't because more "important" things have cropped up in my life.

The Sky fell on Milena Del Valle on July 10th. Which is to say Milena Del Valle was driving through one of the tunnels of the "Big Dig" and a chunk of the celling fell on her.

I've wanted to mention this because the Big Dig has cost $14.6 BILLION for US Americans, and I say US because much of that money was from the federal government. The Big Dig was a big boondoggle from the get go. It was orginally budgetted for 2 billion and the cost overruns( and scheduling delays) have just kept coming. The article I link aboved mentions that even before the chunk fell, there were leaks all over the tunnels. I also found an engineering article about it. The second article mentions how this project was flawed from an engineering p.o.v. Which just blows my mind. That we here in the U.S. have wonderful public works projects from the 40's and 50's and they still work fine... but let our modern government and contractors try something and it won't last the decade.
Disgusting.

I'm also disgusted by much of the coverage. For instance instead of worrying if MORE people might be killed... the press is more interested in how the Big Dig will play out in the gubernatorial election this year.
Though I got to say one of the tipping points for me to make sure I blog about this was Mitt putting his foot in the TAR BABY. Yup. Showing his presidential timber he used imagery of Tony Snow, comparing the Big Dig to a tar baby.
"The best thing politically would be to stay as far away from that tar baby as I can," he told a crowd of about 100 supporters in Ames, Iowa.

"I'll get the blame for anything that goes wrong," he said. "But I'm sure tired of people who are nothing but talk. I'm willing to take action."

And btw the action in the quote he's done... he got the guy in charge of the big dig, Turnpike Authority Chairman Matthew Amorello, to resign. That's it. Mitt's wanted to fire this guy for years, and before Mitt conveaned a kangaroo court to oust him... the guy resigned. Mitt didn't call for more inspections years ago- he called for Matthew Amorello's head. He got it, and other then the above Tar Baby quote I've heard nothing more from Mitt about how to make things better.

Oh and if any of you live in Nevada, you might want to leave NOW. See that's what I love about the Big Dig; after cost overruns, lateness getting things done, and criminally negligence work... one of the companies- Bechtel, is still getting government contracts. In point of fact, the contract in Nevada is for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump. So that should be interesting...
