Punting the Ball

I started last week with a political rant, which maybe I’ll get back to tomorrow- but for the past couple of days I’ve felt a bit bad about NOT blogging. So tonight I’m blogging to just get rid of my anger at one of my good friends.
Said friend is manager at the game store I work at. He’s been manager there for at least 5 years; I’ve worked there for about 10 years on and off and I’ve know him for over 20 years. I asked him about a month ago to write a letter of recommendation for me to help me get a library gig.
After bugging him on and off for the past month, as mentioned above, he wrote me about a paragraph. I was sort of pissed as it was quite generic and short. I asked for advice, put it off myself for a week and finally wrote the letter of recommendation myself. I had both Evan and Adj. take a look at it- and they both liked my version. So I emailed my version to my friend and his girl friend. I sent it to the gf because I know he has a bad habit of NOT looking at his email- and I felt that both he and I had procrastinated enough on getting this letter done.
My friend’s gf told me in no uncertain terms that she preferred the first draft. She mentioned that MY draft was wayyy too long and that the first draft was short and to the point.
I got angry because I had really TRIED to do a good letter- and everyone I showed my friend’s draft, agreed with me. Then it hit me like a lightning bolt. Perhaps she was defending HIS letter, not just because she was his gf- but because SHE and not HE had written the letter. I thought this made sense as he is lazy and she has a habit of being defensive. This got me even angrier- both at him and her.
I called a third friend who knows all parties and asked him for his input. He felt that she could’ve been on the defensive and in favor of the first draft either to defend herself or her bf. When I pressed the 3rd friend as to whether he thought the manager could’ve gotten his gf to write the letter, he found this a HIGHLY plausible idea.
So I intend to talk to the manager on Tuesday- next day that he’s working, as I don’t want to call him at home where she could intercept the call and/or try to convince him that the first draft was really better.
And now I’m going to try to put this behind me, as I’ve done what I can for the time being. It upsets me how much my friend punted on this letter- but really I’ve known him for 20 years and shouldn’t be surprised.
